PROBLEM

Branching off from Upwork

On the path to financial freedom and starting a business, creators often test the waters with their expertise as freelancers to sell their goods and services. Formally based on and successfully operating from upwork, the client was looking to expand his clientele and present himself as an established business and reputable vendor and gaining the confidence and evidence that his work was valued.

SOLUTION

Establish a brand identity and online portfolio

The client was looking for a business site with portfolio-like pages to present his work on a more personalized level. The goal of this project was to create a website for users to directly work with the client as their own entity, while showcasing their work and presenting themselves as a thought leader and someone worth working with.

DESIGN PROCESS

Researching What Works

I joined the project to lead the design after the main designer had left for vacation after the homepage design had been completed and approved, giving me a foundation and theme to work off of and build upon, but now my goal was to complete the design as the new main designer. I focused on following the PRD, and researching other successful studios, agencies, and businesses in the similar markets to study how they approach presenting their work to potential clients, and how those websites were structed to operate with success. I also made sure to be open and receptive to lead designers who would review my work and make suggestions to improve the direction of the design.

DIRECTION AND ITERATIONS

Feedback and iterations in my designs

Based on feedback from senior designers, I continued to iterate my designs over 3 weeks with these major improvements:

Iterations-1.3
Iterations-2.2
  • Originally designed to visually show value and depth through icons and imagery.
  • Based on feedback, presenting all of the values created a lower amount of effort for the user to absorb the information.
  • The icons showed a more delightful way to show the professional, but personable image of the company that the client was looking for.

CONCLUSION

What i've done to improve and lessons learned

  1. Always keep the business goals in mind. It’s easy to get caught up in the style and ideas of interactions and artistic design elements, but the focus should always be on understanding not only the user, but the client’s aim for the project.
  2. Looking back can lead to new discoveries. After completing another project independently, I looked back on this design and saw areas I could have designed better. It allowed me to look at my own work objectively and see what feedback I’d have given to create a better outcome.
